Spray paint dollar store mirrors

There are all sorts of cool projects using dollar store mirrors on pinterest. I helped my parents with my brother's rehearsal dinner and used the $1 mirrors to put centerpieces on.

I bought six mirrors for $6 from the Dollar Tree. I wish they had a little more detail to them, but oh well.

Painted wine bottles for centerpieces

In yesterday's post, I mentioned that my brother got married over the weekend. One of the ways they decorated the reception hall was by using painted wine bottles and baby's breath. Credit for this post goes to my new sister-in-law.

You can get wine bottles for free from recycling bins (I dug through our town recycling bin for these) or most bars/restaurants will just give them to you.

Side swept updo

I've been swamped at work and my brother got married over the weekend so I had to abandon the blog for a few days! I plan to share some of the wedding details/decorations this week followed by a couple Husker projects (woohoo tailgating and college football this Saturday!)

I've had some reader requests for hair tutorials lately. I've mentioned in passing that I usually do my own hair for events even though I'm not a professional. My brother's wedding was no exception. I decided to do a side swept updo.

When I practiced, it took me less than 15 minutes. For the real deal it took me over an hour simply because I was curling my hair better and trying to take pictures. Here is what you'll need:

Faux tall baseboards

Tall baseboards make a house look more expensive (probably because they are really expensive). Fake a nice thick baseboard by adding a thin strip higher up and then painting in between. I haven't done this, but maybe it's something we can do in our basement once we get to that point. Still working on drywall. Ugh.

These pictures are all courtesy of The House of Smiths.

Here are a couple other tutorials from bloggers that tried this out:

Coconut Oil experience

I know, I know. I'm way behind on the coconut oil trend. People have been talking about the many uses of coconut oil for a while now and I'm finally jumping on the bandwagon. I bought a big tub (56 fl oz) from Sam's Club last night for $15. Cheap considering this should last a long time and doesn't expire for a couple years. Here's the brand I purchased:

Framed Husker N

This is a post from several months ago, but I thought it was worth a revisit with Husker football right around the corner!

Beware of these flowers...

I've been brainstorming ways to decorate for a rehearsal dinner. The following flowers (or maybe they're weeds?) are popping up in ditches so I cut some and made arrangements.

Planting trees

Disclaimer: Our grass looks absolutely terrible! We've hardly gotten any rain the past few weeks and it's going dormant already. We inherited a really awful lawn when we bought the house and it'll probably take us a few years to whip it into shape. We plan to aerate and overseed this fall.

Moving onto the trees. Our house had no landscaping - zero zilch nada. The yard looked lifeless so we've been planting perennials like crazy this spring.

I know you're not supposed to plant trees in the summer, but Home Depot had their trees marked 75% off and I just couldn't pass it up (you know me)! We bought three trees and spent about $40 total. We saved $110 since they were on sale!

DIY Outdoor Sectional

I can't take any credit for this post, but I sure wish I could! This sectional is at my aunt and uncle's home and was built by their son Paul.
