How to texture a ceiling (cheaply and easily)

I promised that I'd show you pics of the bedroom now that it's painted, but before I can do that I have to share how we added texture to the newly drywalled ceiling for the cost of a bucket of mud ($10). It's so much easier than I thought it would be! This needs to be done before painting the walls.

Step 1: Take regular drywall mud, add it to another bucket (we used an empty drywall bucket), and add water until it's about the consistency of brownie batter. We used the drill with the following attachment to mix.

See a similar mixer here

Step 2: Pour it into a paint pan, take a regular paint roller, and start rolling it on the ceiling. The ceiling does not need to be primed. Just sand down the joints and clean it up.

Step 3: Follow immediately with a texture brush. My husband rolled and I followed with the brush. Basically you just do a stamping motion on the ceiling.

We are putting crown molding up in this room. That's why the corners aren't taped and mudded. If you're not using crown molding, tap and mud corners before adding texture to the ceiling.

Followed by stamping. This is the brush we used. We borrowed it. (Thanks, Jeremy!)

Step 4: Let it dry overnight. Touch up, if need be, the next day. Here are the after pictures:

Sorry, I had a heck of a time getting a decent picture of the whole ceiling.

Easy peasy, right?

  1. Looks great! Have you tried this same method on walls for texture? Currently working on removing old wallpaper, only to find smooth walls (which the husband doesn't like). Wondering if this would be a good solution! Thank you in advance!

    1. I have not, but it's an interesting idea. You can buy different types of texture brushes for different patterns. Best of luck if you decide to give it a shot!
